Xi'an Citywalk: Three Routes, Water Stations and Restrooms
A thirteen-dynasty ancient capital and the starting point of the Silk Road, home to the Terracotta Army and the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda—where historical depth and hard-tech industry shine side by side. The Citywalk experience is half scenery, half logistics: water, restrooms, shade, and how you get back. Pick the wrong route and you'll be power-walking 30,000 steps with nowhere to sit. The three routes below are graded by fitness level, with each water station clearly marked.

First, the bottom line: how to choose among the three routes
Xi'an is one of the most Citywalk-friendly ancient capitals in all of China: the Ming City Wall encloses the old town in a neat rectangle, the Bell Tower sits firmly at the center, and the four main thoroughfares are plainly named 'East,' 'West,' 'South,' and 'North' — nearly impossible to get lost. Three classic routes stand out: ① City Wall loop — enter at YongNing Men (South Gate), rent a bicycle, and ride the full 13.74 km circuit, taking in sweeping views of the old town and the distant High-Tech Zone skyline in about two hours; ② Cultural route — enter through ShuYuan Men Ancient Culture Street into the Stele Forest Museum, exit via XiangZiMiao Street and thread through ShunCheng Alley, passing coffee shops and traditional courtyards, ending at DeFu Alley Bar Street; ③ HuiFang route — start at the Bell Tower, pass the Drum Tower, head into BeiYuanMen and HuaJiaoXiang, then cut west to SajinQiao for the locally loved version of HuiFang breakfast — the whole walk ends with a good meal.
- The Xi'an City Wall is the largest and best-preserved ancient city fortification still standing in China. Originally built during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, it spans 13.74 km in circumference and features 18 existing city gates.
- Yongningmen is the main southern gate and currently the primary entrance for city wall restoration and ceremonial welcomes, with the entry ceremony performance held in the evening.
- ShuYuan Men Ancient Culture Street takes its name from the GuanZhong Academy of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The entire street concentrates shops selling writing brushes, inkstones, rice paper, and ink sticks, along with stele rubbings and antique scholarly goods.
- SajinQiao is every local's beloved choice for HuiFang breakfast — meatball Hulatang (spicy pepper soup), beef patties, and Zengao (steamed sticky cake) draw long queues from early morning.
- Huancheng Park runs along the outside of the city wall. The tree belt and moat form a green ring around the old city — a free citywalk refuel stop.
The charm of a Xi'an citywalk lies in the 'one ring, three levels': from the top of the wall you see the grand layout, from the alleys below the wall you see daily life, from the central Bell Tower you see the bustle of traffic — walking the same stretch at three different heights offers completely different experiences.
The plane trees and Chinese scholar trees in the old city form a continuous canopy in summer, so even on days above 35 °C, the Shuncheng Alley–Shuyuanmen corridor lets you stroll at a comfortable pace.
Second, route details and supply stations
- Step 1 (City Wall Loop · about 2 hours): Start from Yongning Gate Station on Metro Line 2, climb the South Gate city wall, and cycle clockwise. Allow about two hours including stops. You can briefly step down at the West Gate and North Gate to rest.
- Step 2 (Cultural Route · ~3 hours): From inside Yongningmen, turn onto the west section of Shuncheng Alley and walk to Shuyuanmen. Enter the Forest of Stone Inscriptions Museum for about two hours of carved-stone viewing, then exit via Xiangzi Temple Street and connect to Defu Alley.
- Step 3 (Muslim Quarter Route · ~3 hours): Gather at the underground passage near the Bell Tower, climb up to the Drum Tower, then enter the main street of Beiyuanmen. Walk through Huajue Alley to see the old courtyards around the Great Mosque, and finally head west to Sajinqiao to wrap up with breakfast or late-night snacks.
- Step 4 (Optional Combo): If you have good stamina, combine Steps 2 and 3 into one day — lunch at Sajinqiao in the morning, the Forest of Stone Inscriptions in the afternoon, and ascend the city wall at dusk for sunset.
[Walking Tips & Gear]: ① Xi'an's summer sun is fierce. Cycling on the city wall is best done 8:00–10:00 or after 17:00; the wall top has almost no shade, so a hat and water are essential. ② City wall bicycles are priced by section; deposits are handled online. Double parent-child bikes are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. ③ Shuncheng Alley connects to the Ring City Park, forming a shaded alternative for leisurely walking below the wall — you can hop on or off the wall anytime if you get tired. ④ The Shuyuanmen-to-Forest-of-Stone-Inscriptions stretch is best on weekday mornings, as the cultural shops along the street usually open after 10:00. ⑤ Beiyuanmen (the main Muslim Quarter street) is tourist-heavy during the day; locals head to Sajinqiao for breakfast. Walking both streets together gives the complete experience.
III. Pitfall Avoidance and Return Trip
- [Cycling Safety]: The brick surface on the wall is uneven in places. Slow down on downhill sections, and always buckle children into the built-in safety harnesses on parent-child bikes.
- 【Prayer Time Consideration】: During prayer times at the Huifang Mosque, several side-street intersections nearby can get crowded. Respect local customs by slowing down, and always ask permission before photographing people.
- 【Summer Hydration】: Vending machines along the city wall are limited. Stock up on water at the convenience store inside Yongning Gate before heading up. Drinking water stations are available at regular intervals in the moat park.
[Shuttle and Route Tips]: ① Exit Yongning Gate Station on Metro Line 2 and you're at the South Gate entrance—the natural hub for all three routes; ② If you want to descend the wall midway while cycling, you can only return bikes at designated gate stations. Pay attention to signs, or you'll need to cycle back to the original drop-off point; ③ The Bell and Drum Towers combined ticket includes tower entry. To enter the Bell Tower, use the underground passage with its ring-shaped entrance. Be aware that the passage may impose crowd control on holidays; ④ Guangren Temple is outside the northwest corner of the city wall and is the only Tibetan Buddhist temple in Shaanxi. A quick visit draws far fewer crowds than the Muslim Quarter; ⑤ Manage phone battery all day: cycling, photography, and scanning QR codes to buy water drain the battery fast. A power bank is essential.
